Deep in the wooded heathlands of Suffolk's Heritage coast, 20 minutes drive from Aldeburgh with its famous festival and concert hall, lies Butley Priory, all that remains of the Augustinian monastery founded in 1171. Set in its own 7 acres, within an area of outstanding natural beauty, the building is a unique example of 14th century architecture, and retains something of the peace and serenity of those ancient days.
Once an important destination for medieval pilgrims, Butley Priory, now converted
into a magnificent and fantastic mansion, offers today's discerning travellers
a more luxurious retreat. Visitors may now stay on a 'Bed and Breakfast' basis,
as guests of the Cavendish family. Butley Priory is steeped in legend and folklore.
Despite the mystery of the walled up rooms above the west wing and the enigma
of the silver coffin, guests always remark upon the house's warm and romantic
atmosphere.
